North Yorkshire churches throw open their doors for Yorkshire Churches Day

Hundreds of churches across North Yorkshire are preparing to welcome visitors for ‘Yorkshire Churches Day’ (YCD) on Saturday 16 September. Run by the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust (YHCT), Yorkshire Churches Day is a day where everyone is encouraged to visit their local place of worship even if they have never stepped foot inside a church before. It will be a day for those who are curious about the history and heritage of their local surroundings. Rowers make a splash for Martin House this weekend

Teams of rowers will make a splash for cash this weekend when Martin House Children’s Hospice holds its Dragon Boat Race at Roundhay Park. More than 40 teams will battle to be crowned champions in the contest on Waterloo Lake on Sunday 25 June. The Harrogate Community Choir Festival will be held at Harrogate Theatre on Saturday 18th March. Six choirs from across the district will be performing together for the very first time. Children with cancer in Yorkshire enjoy some magical Christmas fun at the Candlelighters Christmas Party

The children’s cancer charity held its much-loved Christmas Party for the families it supports on Sunday 4th December in Bradford, with over 400 family members from across Yorkshire attending. For over 45 years, Candlelighters has supported families facing childhood cancer across Yorkshire by offering a range of practical, emotional and financial support services. Each year, Candlelighters holds a Christmas Party for the many families they support, providing an opportunity for these families to spend some much-needed time together, and have some fun and escapism from their day-to-day reality. Candlelit Christmas Remembrance at Stonefall Cemetery

Sunday 18th December, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) was pleased to host a Candlelit Christmas Remembrance at Stonefall Cemetery in Harrogate. The now-annual event was the inspiration of local mum Benji Walker who had seen images of CWGC cemeteries in Europe lit by candlelight. She said: The Candlelit Christmas Remembrance is a chance for the local community to gather to remember the sacrifice of the hundreds of CWGC casualties buried at Stonefall, many of them thousands of miles from home.
